Is Finding Your Purpose Overrated?

I used to believe that to “find your purpose” was the end goal to live a successful life.

But the deeper I ponder about this, I’m beginning to think there’s more to just live with a purpose.

“Find your passion.”
“Find your purpose.”
“Love what you do.”
“Do what you love.”

I truly believe purpose is found through experimentation, enjoying the little moments, enjoying the process, and finding what sticks.

The statements above though, makes it seem that you must find your passion, your purpose (whatever that may be) and then love it everyday because you’re such a machine and you know exactly what you are doing and what you want in your life, all the time.

But we’re not machines. We’re simply complex humans. So it’s not always easy to love what you do. It’s easy to SAY it, but not necessarily easy to do.

Because life can be hard and challenging, it’s about the process; you aren’t born only to want to reach 100 years old without enjoying all the enjoyable moments that life has to offer in your 20s, 40s, 60s and so forth.

We must LOVE THE PROCESS more.

How? With a bout of creativity, consider this ‘PROCESS’ acronym which will help us find something that we’re passionate about, and let it evolve into our purpose.

P — Be Proactive on what you want to set out to achieve.

R — Reflect on your day and improve it for tomorrow.
O — Observe what you do, be self aware of your actions and others too.

C — Choose choices when they are present. Don’t be concerned about the future that hasn’t happened yet.

E — Enjoy the process. Another gentle reminder!

S — Save the best for last, but celebrate little wins along the way. Find what sticks!

S — Self-belief. There will be people and obstacles along the way that will try to knock you down, but if you have self-belief, you will succeed in the process.

The next time you hear “find your purpose” or “love what you do”… think about what purpose means to you.

For me, I’m appreciating that purpose is not the end result, but the process of what you’re doing.

To love what you’re doing, means to dream up dreams, experiment and try new things, love the little wins and finding what sticks for you.
